September 13 was Positive Thinking Day — did you celebrate? If not, don’t worry, there is great power in being positive year-round. You may not be able to control your circumstances or the environment around you, but you can control your attitude. Maintaining a positive outlook can surprisingly help to change your circumstances, or at least how you perceive them.

The power of positive thinking comes into play tremendously for those on a wellness journey. When it comes to working out, remaining optimistic when things look challenging will help you achieve your goals. Remember, your mind is a powerful thing that can help push you further, even when your muscles are sore.

Harness the power of your mind with these three simple yet effective positive thinking activities:

Positive Thinking Exercise #1: Mental clarity through affirmations.

One of the best pieces of advice we’ve received here at Youfit is to talk to yourself instead of only listening to yourself. Oftentimes, we get lost in thoughts that lead us to a very negative place. We get down on ourselves and fixate on how difficult something may be or doubt our ability to complete a challenge or task, and this can lead us questioning our self-worth. Instead of letting your thoughts run wild, start practicing positive affirmations that build you up. Take control of the negativity by confidently reminding yourself that you are wonderful, strong and able to accomplish anything. We’ve seen success by writing down positive affirmations and beginning each day by reading them out loud to ourselves. If you feel your day getting derailed, encourage yourself by repeating your affirmations. After all, the only solution to your mental pollution is with positive dilution!

Positive Thinking Exercise #2: Envision yourself achieving your goal.

Visualization is key to personal success. In order to achieve your goals, you must believe in yourself and trust that you’re able to accomplish anything you put your mind to. Whether your goal is to lose weight, cross a finish line or create a new holistic lifestyle, frequently visualizing yourself at the end goal will help you grow that self-belief. By visualizing, you will improve your attitude by consistently having positive thoughts toward the goals you’ve set for yourself. This will also help you feel empowered and more likely to continue on your journey.

Positive Thinking Exercise #3: The Power of Association.

Association is everything. Your future is partly determined by your five closest friends. If you find your inner circle being negative toward working out or any other goal you have set for yourself, chances are you are going to pick up their negative attitude. It’s important to surround yourself with like-minded individuals who will provide you with support and encouragement as you work toward your goals. Positive associations will help protect your mental clarity and help minimize any self-doubt. Quieting the negative people in your life will make it surprisingly easier to stay positive and reach your goals.
