Getting Creative with the Kids at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital

On Wednesday, June 1st, the Youfit Marketing Team was lucky enough to spend the afternoon with some amazing kids at the Nicklaus Children’s Hospital in preparation for this September’s Miami Children’s Foundation 5k.

Going into the hospital to begin our day, our intentions were clear: get a first hand experience on the kids and the foundation we will be supporting, and take advantage of an opportunity to create a fun and uplifting experience for the kids. Little did we know that these kids would make a huge impression on us and create memories that we will carry for the rest of our lives.

After first arriving, having our guide give us a tour of the facility truly set the tone for the rest of the visit. To consider the Nicklaus Hospital as being just a hospital would be a severe understatement. The work and time the staff put in to make this place as hospitable and welcoming as possible for the patients and their families is astounding. An in-hospital pharmacy, cinema, library and gym are just a few of the amenities at the Michael Fux Family Center that are available to the patients and their families. The communal areas of the hospital can easily be mistaken for a cozy home or an upscale resort.

The Nicklaus Hospital is one of the best in the nation, partly due to their cutting edge technology that they utilize a daily basis. Their new Telehealth Center is a perfect example, as it features state-of-the-art equipment that enables NCH physicians to participate in video conferences with other physicians around the globe. This facility alone is designed to advance pediatric care for children around the world; a goal that perfectly aligns with the hospital’s mission to inspire hope and promote lifelong health by providing the best care to every child.

The play area we utilized for our event was no exception to the supportive and comforting atmosphere felt throughout the rest of the hospital, as the room was filled with impressive games that could keep kids and adults alike entertained for hours. We were excited to meet the kids, to say the least.

The patients we had the opportunity to meet were incredible humans. They overcame battles that not many of us will ever have to deal with, all at such a young age. The vigor, excitement, and strength that they embodied was striking and could be seen just by looking at their smiles. Their capacity for fun and happiness was apparent, and made our day an incredible experience we will never forget.

We were lucky enough to play with this group of kids for a few hours and participate in some fun games like chess, Connect 4, a bean bag toss, and a painting activity. To really explore the minds and imaginations of these amazing kids, we asked them if they could run anywhere, where would they go, and then instructed them to paint out their ideas. A field of unicorns, space, and a scene from Brave were some of the settings that were painted.

We even had a couple of clowns make an appearance.

Our visit to the Nicklaus Hospital was an amazing success and has gotten us even more anxious and excited for the Miami Children’s Foundation 5k that we will be supporting on September 17th. Our goal for the next few months is to increase the awareness around this event, and show how the dedication and support apparent in the hospital and the staff is truly making a difference in children’s lives.
