Merton Wheeler

What goals did you set for yourself when you started the challenge?

When I initially started the challenge my goal was to hit 80 pounds. I said if I can hit 10 pounds a week I can hit 80 pounds.

At the end of the 60 day challenge did you hit those goals?

I didn’t quite get to 80 pounds. Up to maybe the sixth week I was on track to hit it and then I hit a weight loss plateau. I didn’t quite get my 80 and at first I felt a little disappointed, but then I looked back and said, “Merton, you just lost 74.4 pounds. Take it!” So even though I didn’t hit my 80 pounds, when I really look at it, I can’t complain about my results.

Which exercises did you find helped maximize your workout?

Well I would have to say the treadmill. Mainly because I was able to burn a lot of calories. I always had a goal of burning 800 calories within an hour. If I did 900, I was doing pretty good. So I could challenge myself, monitor my progress, and it had a nice TV so I could watch a good football game while I was working out as well!

What advice would you give someone who wants to start a fitness transformation like yours?

First I would say plan your work and then work your plan. In other words, you have to have a goal. I know when I initially set out I said my goal was 80 pounds. That means I would have to do 10 pounds a week, so that was my goal. Then I said, well, that means I have to do about a pound and a half a day. I did the math and I had to burn about 5000 calories a day.  So if you have your goals and you map it out how you’re going to accomplish those goals, you work towards it…the beauty of fitness is what you put in is what you get out. You’re in control of your goals, if you put the effort in, you’re going to get the results.

How did you stay on target and motivated during the past 60 days?

One of the things that kept me motivated was seeing myself progress towards my goal. After my first week I lost 20 pounds and I remember thinking, “Wow, nothing can stop me here!” As I progressed each day, I was reaching my goal and I realized I was ahead of it. It kept me more motivated to keep pressing forward as I was on the verge of doing something pretty unique.

First thing, I have to buy new clothes! I don’t fit into my clothes anymore, everything is baggy! Definitely need a wardrobe transformation but also want to be able to visit some of my family, take some time off and just get away. Maybe take a cruise and do some things with my daughter.
