Eminem told us “You only got one shot” so it must be true, right? Well in a sense, yes. We only have one life to live, so let’s do our best to make it a life worth living! And if part of that living involves looking for tips to improve your life, look no further. Here’s our top five:
Be true to who you are and embrace your individuality. Life is too short to waste time trying to be something or someone you are not. Stop trying to please other people or to be someone else. Be unapologetically you! You have value, you are worthy, you are important, you are unique, you are talented, and you are irreplaceable. (BOOM! Positive affirmations.) Have the courage to accept yourself as you really are and to act in accordance. When you respect yourself, others will respect you, too! (Or as Birdman said, ‘put some respeck on my name!’ These hip hop lines are really flowing…)
Start fresh every day. No, we don’t just mean take a shower (although, that’s a good thing too). With each rise of the sun, you get a new opportunity to fill your days with meaning. Wake up early one day. Get outside and look at the sun – it’s a miracle! Don’t be held back by what happened yesterday, the day before, the week before, the year before, or even decades ago. Choose to forgive, choose to let go and move on. Every day is a new chance to be the best version of yourself and a new chance to chase after what you want in life. YOLO! (okay we’ll stop with the lyrics)
Live in the moment. Day to day life can be busy and it is easy to get caught up and simply “go through the motions.” Don’t let your life pass you by. Be present and soak up the little moments. Snuggle under the warm covers for a few extra minutes; eat ice cream on a hot day; hang out with your best friend and talk; walk through the park and feel the breeze on your face. Soak in all the little things as these are what make up your life. You might just have the “Magic Moment” that Ben E. King and The Drifters sang of back in the day!
Take a break. Being the best also requires you to take breaks when needed. You’re not a machine (and let’s face it – even machines need new batteries sometimes). Taking breaks can help you avoid physical, mental, and emotional exhaustion. As humans, our bodies and minds need this time to rest and rejuvenate in order to function optimally. Be mindful of how you feel and listen to your body. Breaks from work, responsibilities at home or from life’s pressures can benefit your overall health and wellness, reduce stress, cause a shift in perspective, provide mental clarity, and increase productivity.
Take action on your goals and dreams. What are your goals? Do you want to advance in your career? Go back to school? Learn to play an instrument? Improve your fitness? Eat healthier? Spend more time with family and friends? Well, stop waiting and putting things off until tomorrow. There is no better time than the present to start working toward what you want in life.
