Black Friday Shopping Tips

Pack up the van, folks! The biggest holiday of the year is upon us, which means it’s time to get side-by-side with our loved ones and load our…carts full of merchandise. Okay, so we could’ve finished that sentence with an homage to Thanksgiving, but we know what to expect there; Aunt Rita’s cobbler has been hitting the spot since the late 80s.

No, the real fun, and the real question mark, is wondering if we’ll get in line fast enough to nab a $100 flat screen TV, or an XL air fryer (mom, you promised!). Because let’s face it – the holiday shopping isn’t going to finish itself.

But at the same time, you might be saying to yourself “I know I need to work off all that stuffing and scoop up some Legos.” Wouldn’t it be nice if you could do both? Oh but you can, Youfit fam.

Here’s the thing. You might be tempted to sit behind a computer on Cyber Monday, but the benefits of getting out of the house are worth the trip, especially when you consider that you can exercise while shopping. Wait, really? Yes!

Here are just few fun ways to put a spin on the shopping experience:

Competitive shopping

Pit family members against one another for a Supermarket Sweep-style game. First one to make it through five items on the list and back to the meeting point is crowned the winner. Deals? Secured. Cardio? Done. Bragging rights? No question.

Take the stairs

Lots of stores and malls have two, three and sometimes more levels. Ditch the escalators or elevators and take your game to the stairs. Some estimates peg calorie loss per stair at 0.17 per stair climbed, so with an average of 12 steps on a flight of stairs – even more at a mall – you could burn an extra 5 calories at a time just by taking the long route.

Check all the stores

There are a couple of reasons why. For starters, you might find something you didn’t know you wanted, or you might find a better price. But the longer you walk, the more calories you can burn too. Some estimates are that if you walk for 30 minutes straight, you could get anywhere from 1 mile at a leisurely pace, or 2 miles if you’re really moving. If you’re tracking steps, this is a great way to rack them up!
