Celebrate Grandparents’ Day

For some of us, Grandparents’ Day is every day. (Hey, grandma lets us get away with the stuff mom won’t, right kids?) But it turns out, Grandparents’ Day is a real holiday! Congress passed legislation proclaiming the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents’ Day. On this year, it falls on September 9th. It was signed into existence on August 3, 1978 by then-President Jimmy Carter.

And since we’re a club for those from all walks of life, it’s only fitting that we’d talk about our senior members on this special Grandparents’ Day. Active adult fitness is a big part of what we offer, because it’s a big part of what our members need in order to thrive and make the most out of life. We embrace our SilverSneakers program so we can all celebrate—and facilitate—feeling good at any age.

Sure, we have some classes that are suited for the young, but we have programs that are also for the young at heart, all while providing ways to make the gym a part of your everyday lifestyle. At most clubs that offer YouGX group classes, we also have SilverSneakers classes which cater to active adults in a fun group class setting. (You can read more about these classes at the bottom of that active adult fitness page here.)

Here are the highlights: There’s CardioFit, circuit training, yoga and strength training!

The best part? There are many health insurance companies that will actually pay for memberships for our seniors—really! Stop by at your local club and we can help you learn more about finding out if you’re eligible!

And just in case you’re not yet convinced that a fitness routine is right for you at your age, well:

  • Research shows that seniors who focus on their physical condition also find improvements or maintenance of their mental condition
  • Active adults can reduce their risk of heart disease and stroke to a similar level as active people at a younger age
  • Slow the decline in body function and ability, and stay fully dependent longer
