November is often referred to as Movember, a play on the words “moustache” and “November.” The Movember Foundation calls attention to prominent men’s health issues such as mental health, physical inactivity, testicular cancer and prostate cancer. To create visual awareness, the Movember Foundation encourages men to grow a moustache throughout the month of November and also raise funds to donate to the cause.
The Movember Foundation encourages every man to incorporate five points of prevention into his life:
- Check in with friends
- Talk about the big stuff in life
- Attain knowledge
- Take action
While all five points of prevention are invaluable, Youfit stands for health and fitness, and understands the important role physical activity plays in any person’s life. In recent years, it’s been discovered that the substance in hops called xanthohumol blocks the excessive action of testosterone and estrogen. Researchers at the German Cancer Research Centre in Heidelberg also identified that xanthohumol helps prevent the release of a protein, PSA, which aids in the spread of prostate cancer.
This Movember, we want to get our members at Youfit Oakland Park involved with this good cause. On Saturday, November 14, Youfit will be teaming up with the Ft. Lauderdale-based brewery Funky Buddha to host a fit-a-thon at our Oakland Park location. Participants will go through a rotation of 20-minute classes consisting of Zumba, Cycle, Express Circuit and Yoga. Once participants complete Youfit-A-Thon, they will be rewarded with a unique Youfit and Funky Buddha collaboration beer sample, so come in and sweat for your suds!
Youfit-A-Thon participants will be encouraged to give a $5 donation to help the cause. Male members of our staff will be participating in Movember by growing moustaches and beards. We encourage you to do the same or to donate to our Movember Foundation Team.
So grow that moustache, get your workouts in and enjoy an occasional beer! If you live in the Oakland Park area, make sure you spread the word about Youfit-A-Thon! We’d love to see any photos from the event on our social platforms.
