Celebrate National Dog Day

So, when we found out that August 26 was National Dog Day, our hearts exploded (thankfully, we’ve since recovered). Admittedly, we had long been under the impression that every day was National Dog Day – who knew? But we were still pleased to see that there is a single day dedicated to all the ‘good boys (and girls)’ of our great nation, and why shouldn’t there be?

Scientific evidence irrefutably proves that doggos are awesome. Okay, maybe not in a literal sense, but unsurprisingly, U.S. households with pets in them have in fact been able to see numerous health benefits just by having their furry companions around!

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has reported that having a pet can lead to decreased blood pressure, cholesterol and triglyceride levels, and feelings of loneliness. At the same time, having a pet has been shown to lead to an increase in opportunities for outdoor activities and exercise, and community socialization as well. It’s true!

And as your ambassadors for fitness, health and happiness, we’re big believers in not only loving on your doggies, but taking advantage of your time with them to maximize the health benefits that come with being a puppy parent.

So when you’re away from your favorite Youfit location but you still want to get in a good workout, take your dog along with you – they need it too! PetMD notes that exercise needs for dogs will of course vary depending on their age, breed, size and overall health. By and large, though, the ‘right’ number of minutes spent with activity is between 30 minutes and two hours.

And to be frank, exercising with your dog is a great way to break out of an exercise rut, or to add some joyful variety to your routine, all while still working toward your working toward improving your health. And when your dog is smiling, wagging his/her tail all throughout your exercise time together, is there really anything better? We know how we’ll be celebrating National Dog Day. And by now, we suspect you’ll be doing the same.
