The Rise of Obesity-Linked Cancers Among Millennials

CBS News released an article that reinforced the link between obesity to rising rates of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, and yep, knee replacements. But recently, there’s been a growing body of data that indicates obesity-related cancer rates are on the rise among those 25 to 49, as well.

“The fact that increases were mostly in obesity-related cancers is due to the obesity epidemic, and we would expect that the incidence would increase as this younger population ages,” said lead researcher Dr. Ahmedin Jemal, scientific vice president for surveillance and health services research at the American Cancer Society.

Specifically, those cancers which are tied to obesity include colorectal, endometrial, gallbladder, kidney, multiple myeloma and pancreatic; now, 1 in 20 global cancer cases are related to obesity.

The good news? It’s not all gloom and doom. In fact, it always helps to remember that research alone isn’t a diagnosis, but rather, a reminder and reinforcement for why we take a healthy ‘you’ so seriously.
