Healthy Ways to Eat and Drink this Summer

One of our favorite (funniest) Instagram memes has been floating around for a while now. And it says the following: “Due to recent setbacks, my summer beach body will be postponed another year. As usual, your patience is appreciated!”

Ever felt that way? Yikes – we sure have. As soon as the diet starts, someone invariably brings cupcakes to the office (I’m looking at you, Susan!), or there’s a friend’s birthday party and the menu is cheeseburgers, hot dogs and creamy macaroni salad. Will I eat it? Absolutely. Will I regret it? Ehh, sometimes.

Same goes for when you’re on the road during the summer. Vacations. Work trips. Weekend excursions. When you’re trying to hold together a balanced summer diet – or just a balanced diet in general, what’s one to do when the best options are airport food and fatty, cheesy (delicious) BBQ foods?

That’s what this blog post is about. Helping you see and create healthier options when you’re on the go or on the road.

Plan ahead

Meal prep can be feasible in some cases, particularly if you can bring a small cooler with you and there’s a microwave waiting for you at your destination. But realistically, that’s not always easy. In that case, healthy snacking can be a great way to hold yourself over before you can get to a healthier option and a full meal. For example, raw almonds are packed with nutrients and healthy fats, and they’re very filling – a great way to keep those hunger pains at bay. A half cup fits perfectly in a small Ziploc bag and can even fit right in your pocket.

Another great option for an on-the-go snack? A banana. Even if the outside of the banana gets dirty, the inside stays clean, fresh and flavorful. Plus, they’re packed with potassium that aids in muscle function. Have a banana and some almonds together and you’ll fill your belly – and only ingest 250 – 300 calories in the process!

Put on your ‘diet detective’ goggles

Airports and fast food spots do have healthy options, but be extra cautious to avoid the not-so-obvious pitfalls. Salad sounds like a great option, on the surface. But once you add in some shredded cheese, dried fruit and dressing, some salads can have even more calories than a sandwich and fries. Really! Instead, look to have some orders made right for you. A juicy burger might seem sinful, but if you have the restaurant hold the mayo and cheese, and remove the top bun for an open-faced sandwich, you’re suddenly looking at a much leaner option. And it’s still delicious!

Most of us enjoy a nice summer buzz on occasion. But unfortunately most drinks are loaded with calories and extra sugar (hey, we’re just telling you the facts!). Now for some good news: Vodka and tequila both come in at just 69 calories per ounce, and with a sparkling water and some lime, you’ll get a sweet summertime buzz – and you won’t overload on calories to do it. Drink-up! And then, just to be safe, call for a ride.
